How to Save on Auto Insurance

Follow these rules for automobile insurance savings:

First, always be truthful with the insurance agent or agency. You never want to be caught in a lie, whether it be on an online application, in person, or over the phone. They can call for an immediate cancellation of your policy. Cancellations do not favor well when trying to get auto insurance with other insurance companies. And it certainly would not help you save on auto insurance.

Second, apply and compare auto quotes. The fastest way to receive quotes is online. Apply to a few insurance agencies and see how you qualify and what you qualify for. Always follow up your application with a phone call to each insurance agency you applied to - making sure that it is the correct coverage you are seeking and that it covers you the way you are needing it to.

Next, never lend your car to a person that is not on your insurance policy. Too many people find themselves in this situation and watch their insurance rates increase. All too familiar is when the person they lent the car to had an accident and then was not willing to pay. By contract, it is the car and insured drivers that are covered to a particular vehicle - not people that are not covered under your insurance policy.

Fourth, avoid long drives to and from work. Longer distances add to your premiums. If you can, move closer to work. (I know this easier said then done).

Also, buy a sensibly priced car - one that you like, but at the same time is practical for your needs. Another words, try not to buy a car that is on the "wanted list" by thieves and those cars which rank high in automobile accidents. Always consult with your insurance agent and find out how your car ranks.

Sixth, avoid accidents and speeding tickets. Believe me, it can be done. There are insured drivers that have never been in an automobile accident and that have never had any automobile violation - not even a parking ticket or a no seat belt ticket. Your driving record points can been obtained from a special database available to all insurance agencies.

Next, avoid filling out too many claims. If you file claims, limit them if you can help it. No claims are better still. When you fill out too many claims for every 'ding' you get in your car, you will be 'tagged' - rating high - to the insurance companies.

Eighth, install car security devices. Most or all insurance companies favor well with your decision to protect your car from auto theft.

Ninth, check to see if any of the organizations you belong to or work for qualify for a group discount. Some companies have affiliations with particular insurance companies and participants can receive instant discounted rates. Discuss discounts with your insurance agency for automobile insurance savings. Example: Teachers have a lower accident risk than most other workers in other career fields and are given job related discounts.

Last but not least, some insurance companies allow you to take an online safety course (which you have to pay a minimal amount for), but the savings you get on automobile insurance outweigh the amount one pays for the online safety course.
